Playtime gone wrong

I pride myself on not being the meanest mom around. I do really. However, at our house we DO have some rules that even I will admit, are a little strict. For example, we have a huge family room in our basement and we bought this ginormous couch to go in it. It cost a LOT of money and the rule is that the kids may NOT climb on or take cushions off of said couch. Guess what happens a good two or three times a week? You guessed it! Jonathan takes the cushions off the couch to climb on them. I try not to get TOO mad, but rules are rules. Today his friend Porter was over at our house and they were downstairs watching Disney and I was upstairs doing my list of a million things I gotta do today (read previous post). After a while Jonathan comes upstairs to use the bathroom and proceeds to tell on himself. That is always my favorite because then I don't have to try and figure out who did it, they've already told me! Anyways, he tells me that he took the cushions off to make a cave.

This picture is because Jonathan has days where he is the funniest kid I know. Today he wanted to wear the same clothes that he wore yesterday. We weren't going anywhere so I said sure. Plus it is one day less laundry of his for me to wash. (He did change his underwear though). But for some weird reason he decided to add his gloves. It makes quite a fashion statement, as I am sure you can see. I think maybe he is channeling Michael Jackson or something. Whatever. It's weird.

Just for today (I hope)

I've got lots on my plate today. Oh yeah, I started a new medicine for my Diabetes (recently diagnosed and it sucks!) this week, so I have not been feeling great. Not that I feel any better today, but things have to be done around here! It's all piling up and I think that I've lost a kid or two in the mess. Yikes!
Here goes with my Thursday Thirteen:
1. Do our laundry (2 loads of darks, 2 loads of colors, and one load of whites).
2. Put chicken in the crockpot for dinner.
3. Get showered.
4. And dressed in something other than jammies.
5. Read from Harry Potter to Meghan and Rachel (it's a new thing I am starting-it might be put off until tomorrow).
6. Watch Mansfield Park that I recorded from Sunday when it was on PBS.
7. Maybe get a nap when Sidney and Jonathan go down for theirs...if I can get the bigger kids to cooperate too, that is.
8. Vacuum the living room so that Sidney can't find anything to put into her mouth from off the floor.
9. Sweep and mop the kitchen floor.
10. Read everyone's blog. Don't feel bad if I don't comment on yours- it's likely that I won't get to it.
11. Color with Jonathan and Jenny.
12. Snuggle with Sidney.
13. Watch LOST!!!!!

President Hinckley

I heard the news from my best friend about an hour ago and I still cannot hardly believe that President Hinckley has died. It's like I thought he would be here forever or something. Now, I didn't really think that, but I am awfully attached to him. My heart is so full and so sad. What a truly remarkable man. Think of the growth of the Church that has occured while he has served. All the temples that have been built. It's amazing.

I think the memory that I will always treasure is when he visited my mission in October of 1996, and spoke to us missionaries there. I had been having a difficult time and I wanted to go home. My mission President asked me to wait at least until the Prophet came before I made my final decision. I struggled for a few more weeks and then came the day. I had also received a transfer to a different area and had all my things packed when I arrived at the mission office with my companion and the rest of our zone. The air was thick with excitement! All the Brazilian missionaries recognized this as the ultimate opportunity for them. When else would the Prophet be in a local close enough for them to see and hear him personally speak. For me, a small town girl, it was pretty much the same scenario. As we sat there waiting for him to come into the chapel, I remember thinking, "Will I know he is the Prophet when I see him? Will the spirit testify to me?" I really did want and need to know.

When he walked into the chapel, I felt such a strong feeling of truth that I cannot deny I know that he was a Prophet called of God. The amazing thing that happened next is that I was sitting amongst all the Brazilian sister missionaries and they began to sing the hymn "We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet". I did not know the words in Portuguese, but the spirit was touching me so strongly that I was able to sing ALL the words in the language I was still learning as if from memory.

My heart is especially full since this week for activity days we had a combined activity that was about listening to the Prophet;s voice and we shared his message of the "Six Be's" (because it is my favorite). I had the opportunity to testify to the girls in our ward how much I love the Prophet and how thankful I am for all of his counsels. I'm just so grateful and glad that I took the time to share my testimony of him with them.

I love President Hinckley and will miss him as I have missed all the Prophets that have served during my lifetime....well, maybe a little more.

Gray hairs and vital info

Hey everybody! Well, I have to tell you all that today was a crap-ola day for me as I discovered ANOTHER STINKIN' GRAY HAIR! It's like my fifth one in two months. I'm noticing this may be a trend.

Her Royal Highness asked me for a little more info about the Word Jail. It is designed so that the fine charged for saying the offending word is placed into the money jar from which we draw out the coins and such to pay for chores done around the house. HOWEVER, lately we have been forgetting to charge the fines. It's okay though because my kids are getting better and hardly ever say the word jail words anymore. In fact, I think that I say them (like hell and shut-up, for example) more than anyone. But since I am the mom, I don't have to pay the fines. Isn't it lovely how I can just make the rules to suit me. Oh yeah, it ROCKS to be mom!

The "Word Jail"

In an effort to curb the use of some words at our home, I copied the idea to have a "word jail" from someone that gave a Relief Society lesson once. So, for the last year or so, we have had a Word Jail at our house. It works like this:



Words that should not be used by children (or any of us, for that matter) are written down and that places them in the word jail. If the offending word is then said, a fine is charged.

So, the reason I have been M.I.A. the last few days is because of Miss Sicky. Sidney has been sick and not slept real well (or at all) the last 6 nights. Mike and I are like the walking dead because of lack of sleep. Funny thing though, it hasn't seemed to affect her at all. In fact, she seems determined to try new tricks and basically run me ragged during the daylight hours as well! Here is her latest accomplishment:

I cleaned a bathroom today. Yah, I know. WOOHOO! Go me! Whatever. I still have 2 more to go, plus laundry, plus vacuuming (which Mike and the kids will probably do if I wait long enough), plus sweep and mop the kitchen, etc etc etc.

You get my point.

Cleaning the bathroom, however, got me thinking. ( Scary, right? :D )
....And I thought about the products I was using to clean and it occured to me that a few of them I can NOT live without. It just is not the same without them. That is why I stock up on them and try, try, try not to run out of them.

Problem is I couldn't think of thirteen household products that I can't live without. And it's Thursday Thirteen folks! I can't just have a couple! So I have three. That's right, three. And your job is to leave a comment with the household thingies that you can't live without and together I am sure we will come up with 13. Go us! Hee hee

Without further ado:
1. Magic Eraser. I DON'T care that there is this email going around with pictures of a little boys face and hands that were "burned" by the chemicals in the eraser. I have used these things for years with not problems and I scrub like crazy, as do my kids. AND.... these suckers get ANYTHING off of ANYTHING! BUt hey, they are magic right?

2. Kirkland ('cuz I shop at Costco) cleaning wipes. LOVE these things. I use them to wipe down any surface and just like that...it is clean! Hooray!

3. Windex. What better invention is there than this? Oh don't spoil my fun by telling me that there is a better one. Just let me think that windex is the shiznizzle of cleaning products and let me be happy. And to clarify, I am not talking about Western Family brand glass cleaner. OH NO! Only brand name WINDEX for me.

THE snow fort

This is Jonathan and Meghan working on their snowfort. Well, to be clear, it is MEGHAN'S snowfort, but she was "letting" Jonathan help. I was amazed at her architectural abilities with snow. She had in her mind what she wanted it to be and she was working hard at attaining that. Now if I can just channel that determination towards other things....
So there's the doorway and inside she has the laundry bucket for a chair and you can't really see it, but she also has a plate of sugar cookies that she made out of snowballs and a sheet of ice. Really clever, huh?

And this is Rachel's addition. I think it is the base for the swimming pool. So imagine crystal clear water in that and with it positioned next to the snow fort....what a great place to visit....if you want to freeze that is!

Rachel is my sometimes sweet, sometimes naughty 1st grader. She has a fabulous teacher that tries to keep her in line during the hours that she is not with me and I am keeping her in line.

I love her curriculum for 1st grade. Each of the kids has a notebook and each week they have a new letter and number and for their homework they have to create a page for that letter and number. She also gives a few guidelines. For example, they have to write the letter upper and lower case each 20 times. They have to have a border to their page and it has to be in color. They usually have to think of an animal that starts with that letter and either draw and label it or write a fact about the animal. A few times she has wanted them to do word lists. For the letter "g", they had to have a list with words that use the "hard g" sound and words that use the "soft g" sound.

This week they are on the letter "L". There were the usual requirements: write the "L" in both upper and lower case, think of animals that start with "L" and write a fact about them, write 5 sentences about things you love ("I love..."), and write as many words as you can think of that have double consonant L in them. Like: pillow, smell, etc.

Maybe you can see where this is going....

Rachel had a great list of words. She wrote: well, tell, will, bell, fill, call,pillow, shell, sell, spell. And then she showed my expert parenting skills with her next word. Can you think of what it was? Oh yeah! She wrote....hell.

I said, "Rachel honey, you can't write a bad word on your homework. Think of a different word please."

And then I walked away and laughed.

Weekend update

What a weekend we have had here at Crazyville! Friday night Mike and I were so lucky to have my best friend watch our kids for us so that we could go on a date. It's been so long that halfway through our dinner we realized we were scarfing it down in a effort to be done before...oh wait...they aren't with us! And to top that off, we even went to the same place to eat that we went to the LAST TIME. What is wrong with us? I'll tell you. It's called "no time alone"!
We saw "Becoming Jane" at the Kaysville Theater because it is only $3 vs. $9 for a movie. It was a pretty good movie. I'm glad we only paid $3.

Saturday I was in my jammies all day. Oh yes, all day. Mike and Jonathan went out at one point to shovel the driveway and found our neighbor doing it with his snowblower. Lesson learned: wait long enough and your neighbors will do it for you.

Sunday we woke up bright and early for 9 am church. Yippee! I am so glad to be back on a normal church schedule. My kids are always better behaved first thing in the morning anyway. Jonathan went right to Primary; Rachel did not get brought to me and Jenny didn't have to go on 10 bathroom breaks. All in all, it was a good day. The best part though was coming home and having ALL afternoon to hang out and take a nap etc. I even got to talk to my little sister on the phone for 1 1/2 hours! WOOHOO!
Life is good. Very good.

Sucks Stinks to be YOU!

Today sucked stunk just a little bit for Meghan. Look to the right and you can see why. This morning at breakfast I noticed that above her lip was a little red, but since she has a cold and has been wiping her nose like crazy, I just chalked it up to chapped skin.

Well, after school she hopped in the car and I said, "Holy crap!". I grabbed her face and took a closer look and sure enough....she's got a killer cold sore. This is the biggest one she had ever had. It is the whole left side above her lip. Poor thing. I asked her, "Didn't anyone say anything to you about this today"?

Apparently, no one had enough guts to ask her "what the heck is that?"

So, we are slathering Zovirax on it like crazy, but I am betting she will have it for a good 2 weeks or so.

On another note....she and I had the puberty talk tonight. Yah, double whammy, huh? Anyway, it went better than I thought it would. She took it all in stride and didn't get freaked out by any of it. I guess now I need to prepare for the "sex talk". That one might just freak ME out!

100 things about me that will bore you to tears.....

Well folks, here it is. My 100th post with 100 random facts about me. It'll be a best-seller, I'm sure. (snicker snicker)



1. Okay, first of all, some of you think my name is Pezlady. HA! Actually it is Jana.
2. My maiden name is Cole and when I was younger my dad would joke and say that we were related to Natalie Cole and Nat King Cole. Clearly, we are not.
3. I grew up in a small farming town. Everyone there knows my name. Kind of like on "Cheers", only not as great.
4. I vowed that I would NOT marry a farmer.
5. I didn't. Mike is an Engineer.
6. There are six kids in my family. Five girls and one boy.
7. My husband and I have 5 kids. Four girls and one boy.
8. There seems to be a trend there.
9. My graduating class was 93 kids.
10. I graduated in 1993.
11. Funny, huh?
12. I went to Ricks College (now BYU-Idaho).
13. And graduated with a degree in Home Economics.
14. I went on a mission for the LDS church to Brazil.
15. And LOVED it!
16. I met my husband two weeks after I got home. It then took him another 8 months to get up the courage to ask me on a date. Then it took only 4 months for us to get engaged, and 11 weeks later we were married.
17. In the Bountiful LDS Temple.
18. In March, we will have been married for 9 years.
19. Our oldest child is 9 years old.
20. HA HA, figure that one out!!
21. I love food.
22. Especially sweets.
23. And chocolate,
24. and cheescake.
25. My all-time favorite candies are skittles. The sour ones. Especially blue-raspberry. YUM!
26. I could eat pizza for dinner every night.
27. Brownies are my favorite way to eat chocolate.
28. When I was pregnant with Jonathan, I craved milk. Lots and lots of milk. Not skim milk either. It had to be 2% or whole.
29. When I was pregnant with Sidney, milk made my stomach hurt.
30. Oh yeah, I have only been pregnant 3 times. I have birthed 2 children and I had a tubal pregnancy that ruptured.
31. BUT.....I have 5 kids, and none of them are twins. Hmmmmmmm
32. Top 5 Favorite movies are: Legally Blonde, Some Kind of Wonderful, Pride & Prejudice (with Colin Firth), Cinderella, Cars.
33. I love Disney movies. Probably because I "get" to watch them so much with my kids and I end up memorizing them.
34. I have pulled over 3 times by a policeman. Twice for issues with my car (piece of junk I drove in High School- brake lights kept shorting out), and once for running a stop sign.
35. I sleep on my right side.
36. Mike says I snore, but I think it is just the echoes from his own snoring that he hears.
37. I can cope with life really well if I have had 8-10 hours of sleep at night.
38. I usually get about 6.
39. That should tell you how well I cope on an average day.
40. I have been to 14 of the 50 states.
41. They are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Wyoming....and also to Washington D.C.
42. I have been in 6 different countries.
43. United States, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Ukraine, and Poland.
44. I am a real world traveler, eh?
45. My first kiss was when I was....hold on to your pants.....22 years old!
46. Okay, I am not even halfway done yet and I am running out of things to write. YIKES!
47. I know all the words to "We built this city" by Starship. I remember watching them perform on some show and my sister Amy and I thought it was the best song ever! I think that dates me a little....
48. Cars I have owned: Fiat 124S , Mercury Topaz, Chevy Corsica, Ford Taurus, Ford Windstar, and Ford Expedition.
49. I got a D- in College Algebra the first time I took it and the second time I got a B+. I guess "practice makes perfect" (or at least it makes "better").
50. My nickname is Jax. I know, you all thought it would be Jana Banana or some such nonsense. Nope. It is Jax. And about the only person who still calls me that from time to time is my sister Marni. Funny thing too, I don't even know the origin of the nickname.

Halfway there.................

51. The first concert I ever went to was the Beach Boys in Boise, ID when I was 13 years old.
52. When I was a kid, we owned the ORIGINAL "Chipmunks Christmas" album. We played it all Christmas season long on the record player. My kids think I am pretty cool because I bought the CD version of it this year for them and I already know all the words to the songs.
53. I used to watch the Rosie O'Donnell show everyday until she got too political. Then I stopped. I never watched The View the whole time she was on there.
54. I am a closet "All My Children" watcher. (except you all know, so I guess I am out of the closet now!)
55. I have never gambled.
56. I have been to casinos though.
57. Growing up we lived one hour away from Jackpot, Nevada. It was pretty easy to get to a casino if I wanted to.
58. My favorite color is blue.
59. I love to sew.
60. I made us all matching jammies for Christmas.
61. The last book I read was "Alice's Tulips" by Sandra Dallas. Thanks to Holly for the review on it. It was a great book and I really enjoyed it.
62. The last movie I watched was "Meet the Robinsons".
63. I do not manage the checkbook. My husband does. I DO, however, manage the spending of the money. :)
64. I have been inside 11 LDS Temples. Bountiful Utah, Ogden Utah, SanDiego California, Idaho Falls Idaho, Boise Idaho, Washington D.C., Las Vegas Nevada, St. George Utah, Salt Lake City Utah, Provo Utah, and Manti Utah. That's nothing considering there are 124 of them!
65. I had pneumonia when I was five years old and I was in the hospital for 2 weeks.
66. I broke my arm the last week of school of First grade and had a cast on all summer long.
67. I had my tonsils out when I was 26 years old.
68. Christmas is my favorite holiday. Halloween is my second favorite.
69. Connie and Darrell O. are my favorite aunt and uncle. I lived with them after I came home from my mission while going to school and while engaged to Mike. They really became like second parents to me.
70. I have 2 Sudoku books and if I even get through the first one it will be a miracle.
71. I was the JV and Varsity Boys Basketball Statistician all 4 years of High School.
72. Basketball is probably my favorite sport to watch. I'm sure it's because its the only one I truly understand.
73. I celebrated my 28th birthday eating dinner at a buffet in Cherkassy, Ukraine.
74. We met our girls on April Fool's Day in 2003.
75. I have known my best friend Deanne for 28 years; Amber for 19 years; and Shannon for 8 years.
76. I had to visa-wait in Nashville Tennessee for 2 months before being able to go to Brazil to complete the rest of myLDS mission. Our area covered downtown Nashville, Vanderbilt University, and a large section of low-income project housing.
77. We went on a tour of Sony Music Studios and the tour guide gave us some free CD's (which I couldn't listen to until I got home) and I remember him telling us that Leann Rimes was "up and coming".
78. I stole chalk from the classroom when I was in Kindergarten. My mom wrapped it up and told me to take it back to school the next day and tell the teacher what I had done. I didn't want to so I threw the wrapped up chalk into the big bushes that grew in front of our house. I promptly forgot all about it. The summer that I was 9, my mom and dad were trimming those darn bushes and my mom found the package of chalk. I will never forget that moment.
79. I scored a 24 on my ACT's and I thought I was so smart until my best friend Deanne showed me her score and she had gotten a perfect 32.
80. Besides pez dispensers, I also collect Snowmen, and keychains. I have like 30 keychains. Mike gets me one almost everytime he goes on a business trip.
81. I whistle by breathing in. So do most of my kids.
82. I sing soprano, but not very well.
83. Too bad because I love to sing.
84. Especially with the radio. Really loud.
85. I speak English, Portuguese and some Spanish.
86. I have not had a cavity since I was 14.
87. In High School I used to ditch school (with my sister Amy) and we would forge our mom's signature on the excuse notes.

89. The very first movie I ever saw at a theater was "E.T.".
90. I can't dance.
91. I showed a pig for the County Fair when I was 9 years old. My dentist bought it at the auction and for years after would mention to me what good bacon it was.
