On Friday, day 2 of our campout, Meghan went out in to adjacent field with Grampa Cole, Uncle Lorin and the older boy cousins who were playing baseball. Grampa and Lorin were hitting them to the boys who were catching the balls and throwing them back. It was a game called 500 or something like that.
My kids are not the most sportsy-coordinated kids around. They are great at dance and gymnastics (must be their Ukrainian blood...), but they kinda stink at actual sports stuff. I was not really surprised when Rachel went out by Meghan and tried to catch and got hit in the knee with the baseball. It left a nice big mark that I forgot to get a pic of. Meghan stayed out there after Rachel's accident for a long time. I seriously kept expecting her to get bored. And then it happened. She got clocked right in the face by the ball that she was trying to catch. I took this picture about 1/2 hour after she got hit because as Mike and I were walking back to our campsite with her, I noticed that one of the lenses had fallen out of her glasses and we all had to look for it in the grass. Thank heavens that Gramma and her sharp eyes (ok, actually her bifocals) saw it in the grass.
Today Meghan sports a smaller bruised area above her eye. It is not swollen anymore, but the inside of her eye next to her nose is black and blue. I don't think she is going to try to play baseball anytime soon.

I think Gracie would still be FREAKING out if I took that picture when you did. Lately she has been an UBER drama queen when it comes to the slightest of owies.
Is it weird that I think your daughter looks adorable in that picture?
I'm curious about this Uncle Lorin. I wonder if I know him...which would be so weird in so many ways...is last name Roberts?
Oohhh poor thing, my brother sported a knot like that when he was about her age by running into a tetherball pole, dead on!!! doh!!
oh believe me...she FREAKED out something fierce! This was the best "smile" I could get out of her. :)
That really looks like it hurts. Hopefully she's off track for a while. If not maybe she'll get the sympathy treatment(there has got to be an advantage with a bump and black eye).
Being weirdos in our family, when something like this happens we generally go "You are going to have a COOL black eye/bruise/scrape/whatever from that" Then we all watch with baited breath, and the children PRAY for a cool black eye and stuff.
One time my son was running around the house - in the morning of picture day, of course - and smashed into the banister so hard he fell over backwards. We literally watched this HUGE black lump come up and split on his forehead. It was like a cartoon or something! Anyway, after the initial shock of pain, we were all gathered around going "COOOOOOL!!!" and my son quit crying because he wanted to watch that lump come up in the mirror. =D He carried it around like a badge of honour all week.
ANYWAY! Tell your daughter that that is one nifty lump and bruise and it looks awesome. Please take more pictures! =)
Oiy! That sucks. :(
When I was young, my brothers and I went over to the park to play ball. My older bro jumped over first with the baseball bat and ball. Then I jumped over, and just as I was standing up, he was throwing the ball up and taking a swing at it. Unfortunately, he cracked my head and not the ball. I ended up with a 1-inch raised bruised lump that hurt real bad.
Hope she's feeling better!!
