This weekend Mike picked some of our grapes and got the older girls involved in taking them off the stems in preparation for making juice. If Mike and I do that part, it always takes so much longer because we have to chase kids during, so we decided to offer more allowance as an incentive (okay, it was a bribe) to do that part for us. Meghan was pretty good about helping, but she would rather have been pretending she was married to Zac Efron than help and so she kept stopping and wandering away. Rachel, on the other hand, was gung ho and all about getting it done. She is kind of OCD though and this was the perfect job for her.
Anyway, we got 4 batches of grape juice done for our food storage (24 quarts) and will be sharing the rest of our grapes with a neighbor so that she can make juice for her family to use. What was funny was that during the time we did grapes, I was trying to catch up on the laundry and had washed Jenny's bedspread and hung it out on the swingset to finish drying. (I don't have a clothesline-wish I did!)
Well, Jonathan thought of a fun thing to do and him and Sidney took turns running under the quilt! It was pretty funny to watch.
* Did you notice that all the kids are wearing their BYU shirts? 'Cuz HECK YA- it's BYU time!!

I am so happy to hear someone around here knows how to make grape juice. Up in Idaho I did it once with a neighbor and let me just say it was the best addition to our food storage EVER! So we planted grapes in our back yard here in Utah last year. And ever since then I have been asking around on who knows how to can grape juice and NO ONE 'fessed up!! So hopefully next year we might get a big enough crop to try...but regardless whenever it is...guess who I am going to be calling!!! I remember it was extremely easy, but it was seriously 7 years ago and I can't remember details. So you will have to become my grape juice junky! TTFN
How do you add grape juice to your food storage? Won't it ferment and then you have *gasp* WINE?!
Obviously I've never made grape juice before, well, aside from it being frozen concentrate care of local grocery store.
Yay for you for getting all your grapes picked!
Yes, I noticed the BYU shirts! ;) Do you grow other things besides grapes?
I LOVE homemade grape juice! My mother in law makes some every year and whenever we go to visit, I drink as much as I possibly can :)
I have very fond memories of playing in the clothes that were hanging out on the line! I doubt my mom feels the same way as I do about those memories... lovely dirty hand prints all over her clean laundry... but we just couldn't resist!
I DID notice all the BYU shirts! But, I bet you guys aren't as big of fans as my husband is.... ;-)
You're a good mom. I would NEVER allow any of my children around grapes - until they're at least 30. (hahaha!)
